Let's Start Searching

cannon
About 200 conquistadors that were part of Coronado's exploration were slaughtered here by natives in 1541. Their great misfortune remained an archaeological mystery for 500 years until a team, armed with detectors, uncovered this pricesless bronze canon that marked the first firearm to reach what is now America. Nice find, Ed!

Finding Fortune in Misfortune

Whether we’re searching for clad or jewelry on a beach, or digging revolutionary era coins, we are in fact mostly searching for someone else’s “misfortune”.  And to find “forgotten” sites, we’ll mostly focus key places where to find someone’s historic misfortune. The exception of course is when we’re searching for “naturally occurring” gold nuggets or meteorites. So, we’ll include a bonus section on searching for nuggets.

By clicking on each of the “topics” below, you’ll access sections dedicated to decoding pathways to pure detecting different kinds of sites. Of course we can’t guarantee they won’t have been swept by other detectorists. Nonetheless, chances are they haven’t been found and dug.

As you dive into each of the sections, savor the journey of detecting discovery that will often call upon your skills as a historical detective and possibly introduce you to new apps and online mapping tools. Yes, we all share the urge to rush afield and begin detecting, but as you’ll see, careful research beforehand is your prime tool in revealing pristine sites… it can also add  interesting and even exciting dimensions to your detecting adventures, either alone or with your detecting buddies.

Researching History's Mysteries

No matter where you live, you likely have mostly forgotten historical sites closer than you think. And once you start “digging” into various historical records, you could unearth more pure sites within an easy drive than you could detect in a decade of swinging and digging targets.

In the sections below, we’ll reveal step-by-step where to search for records and clues using your computer or smartphone. Then we’ll offer insights on what kinds of things to look for and how to record, and geographically  assemble your clues.

Once your historical sleuthing exposes some interesting sites, we’ll also offer tips on how to save that information to use later in the mapping and pinpointing your prime locations so you can walk right to the site and begin swinging your coil. Don’t worry, we make it easy.
